Lesson Learned

There is a time when certain things will and will not get done during the day/night. I used to try to force those cycles to get done when they didn’t naturally fit. It took me a little while, but then it dawned on me that there are certain things I love to do at different times of the day. I could either change the order that I did things during the day to make sense or reorganize a bunch of things in life to get to the point that I COULD do those things earlier in the day.

I chose to do the things I wanted to do when they actually made sense to do, which also happened to be when I wanted to to do them.

One example, laying out completely new services, totally a night time task with my headphones blasting music.

Alrighty, back to loving life.

We’ve added a few new features to Rethink Training to ring in the new year.

Copy Course

Users now have the ability to copy a course. By clicking the “copy” button on the management dashboard, a manager can easily create a new course with the exact structure of an existing one. This includes all sections, steps, and checkpoints. All that’s left to do is upload any attachments and assign the course to students!

Rich Text Multiple Choice Quizes

We found that some of our customers could benefit from the enhanced flexibility of rich text multiple choice quizes. Now, multiple choice questions include a rich text editor for better formatting and most importantly, embedding photos and images into questions.

This feature is powerful for creating stronger quizes with interactive course work that, for example, might require students to identify a photograph.

Guided Tour

Another new addition to the platform is the guided tour. It will walk new users with management accounts through the process of creating their first course and explain the basic features of Rethink Training. The guided tour can be accessed from a user’s “My Account” page.

Bug fixes

We’ve fixed a bug in the course assignment area that was preventing courses from being assigned to a group of users properly. Courses can now be assigned to groups.

There’s also been another performance improvement, this time on the student training side. Student training now loads faster and performs much better during heavy system usage.

More to come!

Faster and Easier

Many of this month’s improvements went into the overall speed and reliability of Rethink Training.

The Progress Board has been completely rebuilt with simplicity in mind, so it works well whether you have five users or five thousand! We’ve also added tools to simplify course creation, like the ability to easily “Paste from Word” when transferring Microsoft Word documents into a course.

Other improvements include enhanced performance in Internet Explorer 8/9, and better MP4 video support for uploaded video content.

We have many great improvements to come–but until then, happy training and happy holidays!

Notifications

At the top of every page you’ll see a menu button called “Notifications”. Notifications combine responses to course assignments with the student messages mentioned above. Items that require your attention will be highlighted on the notifications page, and a number total of the highlighted notifications will be displayed on the notifications button.

Progress Board Improvements

We’ve also added several improvements to the progress board section. This includes the ability to respond to course assignments directly from the progress board, filter courses by groups, and other changes engineered to streamline the instructor’s experience.

As usual, there have been plenty of other tweaks around the system, and we’ll leave those for you to find!

Brilliant!

Putting your online training tool to use this way means you can put together an intro course that you assign to a few new potential hires and see the results as they go through it. Being able to see how long each candidate takes on each step of the course will give you strong insight.

There are many, many parts that will affect the decision of whether someone will be hired or not, this can be one piece of valuable information to help make the right one.

Now, you can click in the first one and just tab as you go down the list of stats then just click the Save button at the end. So much easier right?

p.s. The grey ones are your equation graphs and the numbers will show up after you click Save.

Providing online training that you can control for staff and customers around the world is the domain of online training platforms (a.k.a. Learning Management Systems). Online training is something that has been approached by companies ranging from start-ups to Fortune 500′s and most don’t have a functioning solution for this. A new online training tool makes that easy.

“With more and more shift happening towards online applications, it only made sense for us to provide a very simple solution to online training.” says Rafferty Pendery, CEO of Studio98 (Creators of Rethink Training). “Being able to have staff in many parts of the world provides significant advantages to companies, let’s make training those people easy!”.

Online training has been a very fragmented arena, with an impressive number of solutions attempting to make it controlled and manageable. Some companies build their own custom solutions, which then have to be maintained forever. Others use prebuilt Learning Management Systems which require they change their training structure to match that of the platform they are using. Very few have found workable and functional solutions.

In response to the need of training it’s own international staff, Studio98 started working on an online training platform. After showing many other CEO’s, Rafferty could tell this was a widespread problem that had not been solved and needed to become a new Studio98 service. Rethink Training was born.

“I love building tools that require bleeding-edge technology and provide solutions to not only our own company but to many other companies as well,” says Kerry Jones, Chief Technology Officer for Studio98. “Everything is going online, why should training be any different?”

Rethink Training has been in a closed beta since March of this year. Response from the companies using the tool was so positive the tool was fully completed and is now launched for public use. The clients using the tool range from single location operations to Inc 500′s with worldwide staff and customer bases.

“We don’t pretend to have solved the entire problem of online training, it’s a big one and won’t be solved by any single company,” says Pendery “We have focused on building a tool that can solve the problems for very large number of business and are excited about what the future holds in terms of development and expansion.”

It seems everyone has something to say about something. I rarely generalize to this extent but when it comes to advice, humans are inclined to be very generous. No matter how well intended, one’s advice often goes unheeded.

Every parent knows what I’m talking about. In our efforts to have our loved ones avoid our painful mistakes, we sometimes become too earnest in trying to relay our hard earned wisdom to the next generation. Looking at my own forays into fatherhood, I found that my son not taking my advice has made parenting a less than rewarding experience for me. No one teaches you how to be a parent. But life metes out its’ own lessons that can be of great value to the next generation.

I’m pretty free with my advice when I think could help other people. To my disappointment however it usually falls on deaf ears. Is it just the way it is? Does the next generation have to fight a war to know that it is a destructive activity even for the “winners”? I don’t know? But here’s a one solution. A person giving advice to another out of his own experiences has a higher level of reality on its workability than anyone else. We know that few if anyone will go out and use that wisdom, but there’s one person who could and that’s the person himself.

To my horror, I discovered that I seldom take my own advice. I know what is right; I know what to do that results in a more abundant, simpler and happy life. But do I do it? This is my new life project, taking my own advice. What does that mean? Applying what I know in my own life. What a concept!! Life is a process. Sometimes you have to understand something, forget it, and rediscover it anew later in life.

Most of us are quite smart. We know what will benefit us. For example, in my contracting business, when I promoted it expanded, when I stopped promoting my business it contracted. The obvious conclusion is that if you want to expand a business you have to promote it.

You have to let people know who you are and what you do. In these times that includes a web presence. I think most business owners now understand that, but some have not yet taken their own advice. The business owners that know this and have acted on it are moving to the forefront while others drift down the food chain. It’s tough these days. It takes pulling out all the stops and investing in new areas in order to get known. The fact is that more stuff is sold on the web than ever before. And the numbers keep getting bigger and bigger and bigger. You know that. Isn’t it time you take your own advice.
